Dance Your Heart Out!

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and luckily you’ve got Arthur Murray to help surprise your special someone. We all know the blasé expectation of dinner and a movie, which is why you’re a step ahead and armed with ballroom dance lessons. Just like couples, every dance has its own personality and rhythm. Here are a few to get you thinking:

Waltz:  The Elegant Elephant
Waltz is one of the most easily recognizable dances, with elegance and grace defining this classic dance. Considered the mother of present-day dances, the waltz has been one of the most popular dances for over 300 years!

Foxtrot: The Cool Cucumber
A beautiful, romantic dance, the Foxtrot is a favorite for many dancers and is often called the “Get Acquainted, or “First Impression” dance. The smooth elegance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers gave Foxtrot the silver screen treatment and solidified it as one of the most popular dances of all time.

Tango: The Lustful Lover
One of the most passionate and intense dance styles, Tango has a strong emphasis on the love/hate dramatics of attraction. Tango broke into the mainstream when Rudolph Valentino performed it in the 1921 film “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”. A perfect film to end your evening with!

Rumba: The Saucy Seducer
With slow rhythms and seductive hip movement, Rumba is one of the most sensual of Latin dances. The music is a blend of African rhythms and Latin melodies, with the dance moves to match. Not only was Rumba at the forefront of the Cuban and Latin dance craze, but Americanized Rumba is credited as the basis for Mambo and Cha Cha!

Cha Cha: The Fiery Flirt
The Cha Cha is onomatopoeic, meaning it gets its name from the sound of the dancers’ foot movements! Born in 1940’s Cuba as a variation of the Mambo, Cha Cha’s cheeky style and infectious one-two, one-two-three rhythm gets everyone shuffling their feet to the sounds of “cha-cha-cha”!

Swing: The Playful Partner 
Swing is a uniquely American dance enjoyed worldwide, generation after generation. Following the Charleston, Swing dance became the all the rage when Swing music was popularized in 1930’s America. The dance mimics the music, with energetic and playful interactions, bouncy steps and lots of movement.

Samba: The Sassy Siren
Sometimes called the South American Waltz, the Samba is the national dance of Brazil and pulsates to a unique Latin rhythm. It’s a happy, flirtatious, exuberant dance often associated with looks and sounds of Rio’s Carnival.

At the end of the day, dance is about spending time together. So try something new, push your boundaries, but remember to have fun and laugh while celebrating the one you love.

Even Arthur Murray Can Lose Weight

Christmas is here and what a beautiful day it can be, presents for all and food to eat. Tonight, we will feast; tonight we will drink and lay with our big bellies sound asleep. I love the holiday season and love food just as much as anyone; what I don’t love is seeing grandma’s cooking hanging from the side of my pants. What is the solution? Obviously, go to the gym! January is the busiest time of the year to lose weight, put on muscles and transform your body to the new you. I’ve tried the Keto Diet, HIIT Bootcamps and the once popular Zumba. I’m bored. Every year I eat till my heart’s content and every year I try the same diet and workouts. I need a new active routine. What’s new? What’s cool?

During my discoveries I stumbled on Ballroom and Latin Dancing brought to me by Arthur Murray Dance Studio. It’s easy to follow and I noticed a huge difference, in not only my weight loss but my posture and confidence as well. 15 Tips on How to Look Like You Fit in at Your Next Ballroom Dance Event

I get it. Ballroom dancing in Edmonton is a new activity for you, and it can feel like you’ve stepped into a strange new world. It can be terrifying and stressful trying to navigate your new environment. Luckily I can help! Here are 15 tips for making your Arthur Murray experience even more enjoyable.

1. Both ladies and gentlemen should ask their partners to dance in a polite manner. Doing the 100 meter dash to get a “choice” partner would not be considered proper.

2. It is generally considered bad manners to decline a dance invitation unless you don’t know the dance, are sitting out to take a break or have already promised the dance to someone else. Remember that all songs at our Practice Sessions last only a minute and a half. The best way to improve your dancing at a Ballroom event is to dance with multiple partners.

3. If you don’t know who to ask or want to wait to be asked, make sure to stand near the dance floor, looking relaxed and happy-like you want to dance. If you are sulking in a corner, it is a sure-fire way to scare off potential partners.

4. Introduce yourself immediately upon asking someone to dance, or just after. It is nice to be able to know the person’s name that you are dancing with.

5. Gentlemen, escort your partner off the floor or until either of you are intercepted. Don’t forget to thank them for the dance.

6. Never teach or correct other dancers (even if solicited). Leave it to the professionals. This will ensure that correct information will be delivered.

7. Never criticize or blame your partner for mistakes. This includes spouses or significant others. Remember it takes two to tango.

8. Both the leader and the follower should be aware of who is around them at all times, and should assist in preventing collisions. Ladies, preventing your partner from such accidents is not considered leading.

9. If you do step on (or bump into) anyone, apologize to all partners involved immediately, and ensure that everyone is okay.

10. If you have long hair, make sure to pin it because during twirls, the hair can whip your partner in the face or eyes.

11. Use breath mints and deodorant. There is nothing worse than dancing with a partner who is giving off a foul odor. In addition, men and women should be careful not to spray on heavy amounts of perfume or cologne.

12. Observe the line of dance. Faster more experienced dancers should be in the outermost lane, intermediate dancers in the middle lane and beginner dancers in the center of the ballroom.

13. When attending a group dance classes, show consideration for both the teacher and the other students by not interrupting and by adhering to the material assigned. Remember that some students are learning the material for the first time and will appreciate the opportunity to practice.

14. Avoid talking during spotlights!

15. When practicing in the ballroom (which is highly encouraged), be considerate of the lessons in progress. Private lessons should never be interrupted, unless it’s a matter of utmost importance.

No one learns to dance overnight and your teacher doesn’t expect you to remember everything. People learn by making mistakes.

4. Prepare for Events Early
Let your teachers know as soon as you have an event to get ready for (even if it is months away.) Your teacher has the best idea of how long it will take you to “knock their socks off.” If it is a studio event, get it ready so you are not scrambling for lesson time the week before.

5. Spotlights
A spotlight is the best way to take your routine for a trial run before an event. It ensures you are prepared and confident in the routine as well as allowing you to shake off some of the nerves before the big performance. A spotlight doesn’t have to be a routine; get up and show us what you’re working on.

6. Bring Your Friends
Everything is more fun when it is shared and the studio parties and groups are a great time to meet up with people that you don’t see as often as you would like.

7. Get Outside Your Comfort Zone!
The best way to gain confidence and grow as a person is to do something that scares you. We have many events at the studio to help you reach new heights in your dancing. When you feel nervous or scared, challenge yourself, you never know how much you can accomplish!

8. Enjoy!
Enjoy the little things, because one day you will look back and realize they were the big things.

Group Dance Classes 101 in Edmonton

Group dance classes in Edmonton are included in everyone’s program at Arthur Murray Dance Studio, but only a small percentage of our student body really takes full advantage of these dance lessons.

In group class we learn to dance with people other than our regular partner or teacher (who unknowingly can compensate for us). This teaches us balance and how to lead or follow better. We may learn a new step of technique which actually saves you money and time, since you won’t have to learn it on a personal lesson. You get a lot of repetition and practice. If you know the pattern already, then you get a chance to practice more intricate techniques and 40 minutes of standing up straight can really make a difference in your posture!

If you have problems or questions there are usually many teachers who can help clarify things for you so that you can practice what you have learned properly. After all, there is a reason that the students who learn the fastest and become the best dancers, are the ones who spend the most time in the dance studios and attend as many group dance classes and practice parties as they can.

Practice parties are the only chance, on a weekly basis, that a student has to test out their dancing in a real life environment. The parties are always hosted with different levels of dancers who may not all be dancing the same dance at the same time. It is a great opportunity to; learn floorcraft, become a better leader or follower, practice dancing and carrying on a conversation at the same time, learn new dances, improve your confidence in dancing with others and have a lot of fun. The benefits are endless and parties are always included in your program.
